Middle School

Middle School at The Anthony School is built on high academic standards, strong relationships, and a deep commitment to the whole child. We believe students learn best when teachers, families, and the broader school community work in genuine partnership. Our program is intentionally designed to challenge students, support their growing independence, and prepare them for the transition into high school.

Lower Middle School: 5th & 6th Grades

Lower Middle School bridges the shift from self-contained elementary classrooms to a more departmentalized schedule. Students take Science, History, Language Arts, and Math every day. Language Arts includes separate literature and grammar classes, with writing integrated across all disciplines. Teachers present material in oral, visual, and hands-on ways to meet a range of learning styles, and instruction is differentiated to support both advanced learners and students who need additional time or clarification.

Every student takes PE, and 5th graders also participate in a year-long Study Skills course focused on organization, time management, and executive functioning. In 6th grade, students explore both Spanish and French for one semester each before selecting the language they will pursue during 7th and 8th grades.

Upper Middle School: 7th & 8th Grades

Upper Middle School offers an increase in challenge, responsibility, and choice. Students “lock in” to their selected world language—Spanish or French—for both years, allowing for deeper skill development. Core academic classes continue to meet daily, and teachers maintain high expectations while supporting each student’s individual strengths and needs.

A hallmark of Upper Middle School is our robust electives program. Each semester, students choose from a variety of courses that allow them to explore interests, develop new skills, and discover passions. Offerings vary by year but have included:

  • Intro to Photography
  • Finance
  • Intro to Guitar
  • Advanced Life Science
  • Technical Theater
  • Sculpture
  • Open Studio
  • Food Around the World
  • Café Español
  • Video Editing
  • Pre-Season Track
  • Newspaper
  • And more

Prepared for What Comes Next

Our goal is to help students build the self-discipline, confidence, and interpersonal skills essential for success in high school and beyond. TAS graduates are known for being exceptionally well-prepared, and area high schools consistently welcome our students. Several high schools visit campus each year to recruit our graduating eighth graders—a strong testament to the foundation they build here.
