Home study is a building block for good study habits, personal organization of time and materials, and self-confidence. Homework should be relatively easy to complete accurately and independently in grades one through six. First and second graders are expected to spend a maximum of thirty minutes per night; third and fourth graders a maximum of forty minutes; fifth and sixth graders a maximum of one hour. If a child does not understand the assignment and/or his work time exceeds these boundaries, the teacher should be notified immediately.
The curricula and expectations for seventh and eighth grades are more complex and require a greater investment of time in independent study. A maximum of two hours may be necessary for some students. If the student consistently requires more than one and one-half hours to complete his homework, the teacher should be notified.
