Philosophy
The Anthony School Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, and staff are committed to educating each individual student to reach his or her academic potential.  We have a history of success based on high academic standards and cooperation among parents, students, and school personnel.

 

The Anthony School policies and procedures are based on the right of every student to learn and every teacher to teach in an atmosphere of mutual respect.  We provide an environment that enables students to make choices, exercise sound judgment, and develop appropriate academic and social behavior.  Our goal is to teach students the self-discipline required to be successful academically and socially both in school and in the broader community.

 

The Anthony School is a private, independent school not affiliated with any church or religious organization.  It is our policy to teach children respect and tolerance for persons of different faiths, traditions, and cultures.  The Head of School cooperates with families whose beliefs might exclude a child from participating in group activities or whose religious beliefs might require an excused absence from school for religious observances when school is in session.  The Anthony School does not discriminate on the basis of religion, ethnic origin, gender, mental and physical disability, or any other consideration unrelated to education.  Our chef prepares specialized diets for students as needed.

 

We are often asked if The Anthony School curriculum complies with the recently instituted “Common Core.” As defined by Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center), the Common Core, “is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA).  These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do by the end of each grade.  The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live (CommonCoreStandards.org).”  The Anthony School recognizes the value and need for consistent learning goals across states and the importance of staying informed and well versed on what is being required of public schools nationwide. 

We believe in maintaining the high standards, expectations, and traditions on which Jeanne Anthony founded our school; however, we also strive to grow, change, and adapt to current pedagogical practices, technological advances, and evolving curriculum.  This philosophy is more in line with our mission than the current Common Core standards.  The Anthony School prides itself on offering students an advanced, challenging, and unique learning experience.  We continually ensure that our curriculum is in alignment with or beyond other schools in our state; however, we encourage our faculty to design specific lessons and activities based on student needs and differentiated learning instruction rather than adhering to mandated government standards.
