Curriculum
6th Grade Language Arts
2007-2008
The 6th Grade Language Arts curriculum is composed of five subject areas:
Literature:
Students learn and review various skills related to comprehension through plot and character analysis of short stories, poetry, and novels. Students prepare oral and written book reports.
Grammar:
Students learn and review the parts of speech, the prepositional phrase, complements, agreement of subject and verb, verb usage, modifiers, and subject and object forms of pronouns. Punctuation and capitalization are also covered.
Spelling:
The Spelling Workout workbook is used.
Composition:
Students learn the steps of the writing process in order to write effective paragraphs, stories, research essays, letters, and expository paragraphs.
Vocabulary:
Vocabulary is discussed and studied throughout the year as new words relate to literature. Emphasis is placed on dictionary skills, synonyms, antonyms, and prefixes and suffixes. Greek and Latin roots and prefixes are learned in order to build vocabulary.
